Eastern Province permanent secretary Buleti Nsemukila is worried about the massive deforestation going in the province.
Dr. Nsemukila says the continued cutting of trees as a result of agricultural practices in Eastern Province may trigger climate change conditions.
He says flying over the province, it can be seen that there are massive clearings done with a lot of mango trees only visible.
Speaking during a meeting with Community Markets for Conservation COMACO management, Dr Nsemukila says the people of Eastern Province are very hardworking farmers that have made the province to become the food basket of Zambia.
He says that the cutting of trees if not stopped will result in the province facing similar problems Southern Province is currently facing.
And COMACO General Manager Business Smith Kapeya says his organization is promoting a conservation type of farming that does not allow the use of chemicals that destroy the soil fertility.
Mr Kapeya says COMACO is working in partnership with Government to promote farming methods aimed at safeguarding the environment as well as improve yields.
