Remain calm DMMU urges gwembe residents

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) wishes to convey its sincere sympathy to the communities of Munyumbwe area in Gwembe district and other parts of the country that have been affected by the recent flash floods. It is unfortunate that the rains experienced have affected maize fields and destroyed the crops, which may affect the food security in the district. The floods have also submerged bridges thereby suspending movement in and out of the area. The DMMU National Coordinator, Chanda Kabwe wishes to assure the communities in the affected areas that Government will be on ground to ensure normalcy is quickly restored in the areas. Mr. Kabwe has also disclosed that a combined team from DMMU, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Infrastructure will be on the ground to assess the extent of damage and come up with appropriate response measures. The Communities are urged to remain calm as the situation is being closely monitored to ensure lives are safeguarded. The Zambia Meteorological Department has predicted that Mufumbwe, Kasempa, Kabwe, Lusaka, Siavonga, Gwembe and Chipata will experience flash floods over the next few days. The Zambia Meteorological Department will continue updating the nation on the weather changes and therefore members of the public are further urged to closely monitor the weather forecast being issued.
